How to Achieve your Ambition of becoming a Partner

A career in Practice has many rewards, the most coveted of which is the chance to become a Partner in a reputable firm of accountants.

For those who have the ambition and credentials to become a Partner it will certainly require plenty of years of hard work and dedication.

How long will it take?

The time it takes to achieve Partnership from starting out as a Trainee ACA or ACCA does vary from firm to firm, although the minimum timescale is normally often around 10 to 15 years.  This is true for both regional independent firms and the larger National players and the current trend of delaying retirement means some younger Associates may need to wait a little longer for the retiring Partners to exit the firm or for the a firm’s GRF to increase.. The most important thing is to keep focused on your goal at all times and do everything you can to progress along the path to partnership.

One effective approach is to develop a plan for the next 10 to 15 years, with clearly planned out stages identified.  The number and type of stages will depend heavily upon the kind of firm you are with.  Many larger firms will set this up for you as part of an internal training or mentoring scheme.  Experienced Qualified Accountants with smaller firms may need to find their own training opportunities externally.  Aspiring candidates should then work to advance their position within the firm, seeking out challenging assignments and making themselves useful to their line managers and higher management levels as appropriate.  Combining this approach with steady networking and research into future opportunities will stand you in good stead to reach your goal of partnership.

What should you be able to offer?

Partners represent their firms at the highest levels so you need to develop strong skills and positive personality traits in several key areas.  Chief amongst these are confidence and leadership skills, as well as a very firm grasp of your clients’ needs and the ability to advise accordingly. The more knowledge you acquire, the higher you will be regarded.  A trusted and approachable demeanour with clients is crucial too, and that is all about having the right people skills.  Being able to deal well with clients on a day-to-day basis and to handle complex queries promptly and professionally will all be powerful tools right from the first day of your accountancy career.

Another good strategy is to work on your networking skill set to shore up your business contacts in the local area; the more people you can connect with in business the better including the local banks and law firms.  You never know who will be able to help you progress, nor from where you will gain your next fee paying client.  The local independent firms in particular react very well to colleagues who can bring in their own client portfolio and/or relationships - business networking is a must have skill for the next generation of Partners.

The next Generation of Partners - what do existing partners looking for?

An ability to bring in new business is always going to be paramount however confidence and leadership skills are highly attractive, as is a strong work ethic and also the ability to take on more challenging Project work.  At the same time you should never consider yourself too important for routine work - arrogance is never welcomed and you should remain a team player. It remains that the ability to prioritise and recognise the needs of the Practice is an important business trait for which all existing partners will look.

Another valuable asset for would-be partners is the willingness to be flexible.  Relocating between offices can help open more doors and working on Audits and assignments where travel is involved will demonstrate your flexibility.  Staff retention is critical to all firms so be sure to assist in the development and retention of those still coming through the ranks.  You in turn can then be confident with the team as you are going for your Promotion.

Simply put, you should make yourself as easy to work with as possible and invaluable to the firm across many levels.  Done well, the existing Partners will perceive you as being part of the long term future of the firm and achieving your ideal position will be within reach.
