Their ability to think "outside the box" has connected us with candidates we might have otherwise missed out on. Brexit and the changes it may bring for financial recruitment

As debate and speculation continues to rage following the recent Brexit result, it is good to take a moment away from the frenzy of newspaper headlines to reflect on what the new future might look like for independent finance and accountancy recruiters like ours.

Here at Fletcher George, we were very much in the ‘remain’ camp.  We felt it made little sense to bring back economic uncertainty so soon after the financial crisis.  Anyone who knows me will understand that I am not one to take heed of scaremongering headlines but it is the uncertainty that Brexit is likely to cause that brings some of the most immediate concerns for us and for the future face of the recruitment sector- specifically the sourcing of candidates.

As a financial recruitment consultancy, we place a significant number of EU candidates every year.  We have to wonder what Brexit might mean for their freedom of movement and future working rights.  In the post recessive market we have been operating in candidate driven market so skill shortages in the accountancy sector has been a significant concern among fellow recruitment professionals. This situation is likely to be exacerbated if it becomes more difficult to hire EU workers.

It is also our experience that, in times of uncertainty, businesses will implement recruitment freezes – even those with strong balance sheets.  Our local SME market will now be carefully considering their internal systems and support functions before making any additional hires.

But, ever the optimist, I have also been weighing up some of the potential opportunities…

Freed from EU rules and regulations, many businesses believe that things will improve for them and enable them to create more jobs.  It might even become easier to hire talent from outside the EU?

Accountants surely will find themselves in demand from those companies keen for advice on how Brexit will impact on their business and how they will need to structure relationships with businesses across borders going forward.  Tax is likely to be a big issue in the discussions on where the UK goes from here requiring expert input.  And definitely many clients will be looking to their accountants for more regular management reporting in these times of uncertainty. There is no doubt that finance professionals are going to play a vital role in helping business face any future challenges and changes subsequent to the result of this historic Referendum.

My concluding thoughts on all of this?  It’s still far too early to say but while change will not happen over night, what is certain is that Brexit has the potential to cause a significant shift in how recruiters and businesses source Accounting Professionals.
